NEW SILK ROAD AWARD

About the Award

This nation's commercial relationships with Asia are among the most significant factors affecting our nation's economic future. Their importance will only increase.

To acknowledge the contributions of individuals whose work has significantly fostered U.S.-Asia business ties, Cal-Asia created the New Silk Road Award. It commends the deliberate and judicious nurturing these individuals have provided to help America's relationships with Asian markets expand in healthy ways.

The Award itself consists of a framed piece of embroidered silk, representing the evolving patterns and intertwined nature of California's commerce with Asia, bearing a commemorative plate.

PAUL MATTHEWS
Founder, Matthews International Capital Management, LLC
Investment Advisor to Matthews Asia Funds

The New Silk Road Award for 2009 is presented to Paul Matthews by Cal-Asia with deep admiration for his pioneering role in enabling American and other investors to readily participate in the long-term growth of Asia. With over $10 billion in assets, Matthews International Capital Management, based in San Francisco, is the largest Asia-dedicated investment specialist in the United States.

Through their long-term investments, Paul and his team are also helping build and strengthen Asian consumer markets and economies.  The development of these markets is expanding the opportunities in Asia for American technology, manufacturing, agribusiness, environmental and entertainment firms, for exporters and importers, and for the U.S. service sector.

Earlier this year, five of the economies in which Paul's firm invests—China, India, Indonesia, Philippines and Vietnam—were among the handful in the world still experiencing GDP growth.

Paul Matthews holds an M.A. degree in History and Law from Cambridge University and began his investment career with G.T. Capital Management, ascending to President. In 1991, he founded Matthews and in 2002 was named Value Line's Portfolio Manager of the Year.  Paul is a devoted, long-time member of Cal-Asia's Board of Directors.
